We as a La Verne Heights Ministry Group commit to grow together in Christ while serving and supporting the Providence Children’s Home in Kenya, Africa and to encourage others to commit themselves to work with the orphan children.
The Providence Children’s home and attached school continue to progress in both wisdom and service to the orphan children of Kenya. As you can imagine, caring for over 40 orphan girls ranging in age from 6 to 18 carries with it numerous challenges and rewards. Our newest girls are continuing to acclimate to the Providence environment and are attending the onsite school. New supervision leadership (caregivers, counselors and psychologist) has been slowly implemented since the death of our beloved original caregiver, Kagendo. The newly built school boys’ dormitory was badly damaged due to a tragic arson fire. It is now back in operation with much credit going to the 2016 PCH Mission Trip participants. Their arrival shortly after the fire was physically and emotionally extremely beneficial for all concerned. The Mission Trip continued their planned building of a new basketball court as well as providing teacher training and creating and enjoying numerous experiences with the PCH girls. The skills and dedication of the team were amazing especially given the various backgrounds and sources of the individual participants. “Perhaps the most cohesive team to ever participate in a PCH mission trip” says organizer Bill Corrette. LVHPC mission trip participant, Shannon Price, continues to stay in Africa providing ministry to other organizations and assisting at PCH.
Our annual April fund raiser was held at the Doubletree in Claremont with a “Playing For Providence” theme. The evening’s assorted games and presentations provided fun and information about the orphan girls and the PCH ministry. Over $16,000 was raised in support of “our girls” in Kenya. The annual LVHPC Alternative Christmas Fair continues to be a major benefactor for the orphanage girls and this support activity has now been adopted by other churches both in California and other states!
Our Ministry Group is excited to have Donna Heebner of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Claremont join our team this year. Donna participated in the 2016 PCH Mission Trip and her presence helps open doors in expanding the PCH ministry into new adventures.
It has been evident for several years that communication between PCH, donors and interested parties needed improvement. Groundwork for a new communication endeavor was laid in late 2016 with implementation happening as this is being written.
LVHPC love and support for PCH continues to encourage the Christian Voice through the Orphanage and School…much to the benefit of Kenya. Thank you!
