Inland Communities Organizing Network (ICON) Ministry Group
For the ICON Ministry Group, 2017 was a terrible year. Soon after our March meeting, Rev Bob Linthicum went home to be with his Lord. And we were confronted with just how much of the Ministry Group activities and responsibilities had been covered by Bob, Sr. While the group did not disband, it was severely shaken and disorganized. The next few months were more about damage control and less about moving forward.
Two new programs that we had ended 2016 with high hopes for, La Verne outreach and elder care, were deferred. Bob, Sr had been the force behind both programs, and no one in the group was able to pick up the programs and carry them forward.
The ICON organization, while also impacted by Bob, Sr's death, was able to continue its work for the community. A great success was celebrated in June when the Pomona City Council finally approved a ban on any additional waste and recycling businesses.
Another came in July when the LA County Sheriff publicly agreed to work with One LA and ICON to defuse fears of law enforcement in the immigrant community.
The most recent issue being addressed by ICON is the lack of adequate housing in the area, especially for fixed- and low-income families.
To quote Bob, Sr's last report, "This is what your ICON Ministry Group is all about. ICON is dedicated to building the capacity of its member congregations (including LVHPC) and groups to address the suffering of families within the Inland Valley region."
With 2017 behind us, your Ministry Group is looking forward to continuing in this effort. Please join us.
Your ICON Ministry Group:
Bob Linthicum, Jr
and, always in our hearts, Bob Linthicum, Sr.
